What is Dual N-Back?

Dual N-Back is a scientifically backed cognitive training exercise designed to improve working memory and fluid intelligence. Unlike standard memory games, it requires you to track two independent sequences simultaneously—usually a visual stimulus (a square moving on a grid) and an auditory stimulus (letters or numbers spoken aloud).

The goal is to identify when the current stimulus matches the one presented steps earlier.

  • 1-Back: You react if the current square/sound is the same as the previous one.

  • 2-Back: You react if the current square/sound matches the one from two steps ago.

  • Dual Mode: You must press one key for a visual match and a different key for an auditory match.

Most studies, including the seminal work by Susanne Jaeggi, suggest a „dosage” of approximately 20 minutes a day, five days a week, for at least side-by-side weeks to observe noticeable changes in cognitive performance.

This is often referred to as the „N-Back wall.” While 2-back requires you to keep a small amount of data in your head, 3-back forces your brain to constantly update and „flush” old information while holding onto three distinct sets of coordinates and sounds. It is a significant jump in cognitive load, which is why it is highly effective for training focus.
